Your body’s pH balance is extremely important to your overall health. Many diseases and disorders have been associated with an improper pH balance, such as osteoporosis, migraines, cancer, allergies, diabetes, and more. So how do you know if you are out of balance?
It is important to understand pH first – the pH scale is used to measure acidity and alkalinity. Water has a pH of 7.0, which is considered neutral. It is ideal for us to have a pH level between 7.35 and 7.45, slightly alkaline. However, because of our poor diets, most have a pH balance that is acidic, which causes problems throughout many systems in your body.
To determine your pH level, there are basically two ways – you can have a blood test (though even a blood test may not be accurate) or you can do the test yourself with litmus paper, which you can purchase at most drug stores. It is more accurate to do the test first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything. Simply place the paper on your tongue to soak with your saliva. The paper will turn color and will indicate your balance level.
- Red paper will turn blue in an alkaline body
- Blue paper will turn red in an acidic body
If you have determined that you are too acidic, then you are considered to have a condition called Acidosis. If you are too alkaline, then you are considered to have a condition called Alkalosis. Both have their own set of problems. Depending on your test, here are some natural ways in which you can correct your pH level to a more normal and neutral level.
Acidic or Acidosis
When your body is too acidic, you may experience insomnia, arthritis, migraines, and water retention. This can also contribute to diabetes, adrenal disorders, obesity, anger and stress, and liver issues. Herbs that have shown to be helpful for those with an acidic pH level are elder bark, hops and willow. You should eat a diet of at least 50% raw food, including apples, bananas, pineapples, and all vegetables. As you limit your protein intake and increase your citrus fruit and vegetable intake, it will begin to help you pH become more alkaline.
In addition, you should eat your meals very slowly and do not drink any fluid with your meal. Umeboshi plums also contain alkaline minerals and can help.
Alkaline or Alkalosis
When your body is too alkaline, you may experience sore muscles, creaking joints, nervousness, edema, and more. This can also contribute to seizures, high cholesterol, and osteoarthritis. Herbs that have shown to be helpful for those with an alkaline pH level are alfalfa. You should eat a diet of at least 80% whole grains, including brown rice, lentils, nuts, and beans.
It is important to limit any antacid or mineral supplement intake and avoid sodium.
It is recommended that you check your pH levels often to keep your body as close to neutral as possible for a healthy body.
Please Note: Always consult a physician before taking or starting new supplements that may interfere with any medication you’re currently taking or existing health conditions.
