Let’s face it we are becoming a very obese nation. And regardless of all the diet programs being introduced to the public, you are fooling yourself if you think dieting alone will keep you healthy. You have to implement a good exercise program to go along with it to achieve success. It does not matter if you are 12 or 112, exercise is a must. Enter the AARP Silver Sneakers Program for more mature adults.
If you are an older adult and are a group retiree or have a Medicare supplemental insurance program, you may already have a Silver Sneaker’s membership available to you. You will need to check with your provider to find out. For those unfamiliar, the Silver Sneakers Fitness program is also offered through AARP to its members.
Members get a health club membership giving them access to over 9,000 participating health centers within the United States. Like many gym memberships they can use any participating club anywhere they are available. The main difference with the Silver Sneakers program is that there are classes specifically designed for older adults and retirees. Classes are taught by certified trainers where one can learn about health risks like diabetes, how to quit smoking and lose weight. In addition to these classes, members have access to other more traditional weight classes as well as the equipment.
Because it is a program for older adults, a doctor’s release would normally be required before participating and it takes around 30 minutes to apply at the facility. But after that you are on your way and there is really only one additional requirement. Enjoy it, don’t make it a chore. You will end up healthier and happier if you do.
Editors Note: To see if these programs are offered in your area you can contact Silver Sneakers directly by calling 1-888-423-4632. 65 and over can also contact 1800-MEDICARE to learn about AARP’s Medicare program availability in your area.
