Looking professional and presentable is important no matter what you are attending. Whether it’s a dinner date, office party or formal event, looking distinguished has never been easier.
Guys, here are a few tips to look your best for any occasion.
Confidence and mental outlook make a big difference here. Exude confidence and let go of the mental fears of overdressing. After all, you can’t look your best if you don’t feel your best. Be confident, fearless and bold, after all, you are dressing to impress.
2. Keep it Simple
You’ve heard it before, but it applies to a lot of things (even to the way you dress). Many times when you are trying to look distinguished, less is more. Try to avoid wearing a combination of stripes, patterns and a multitude of colors with suit, jacket, shirt and tie. A solid or pin-striped colored shirt gives a basic black, grey or brown suit or jacket a more formal look even though a tailored white shirt is always a winner. Which ever you decide, keep the colors simple.
If you haven’t had your suit resized lately, try it on for size and see if some tailoring might not give you a more distinguished, contemporary appearance. Maybe you dropped a few pounds since wearing that suit last. A trip to the tailor will give you a more polished and tailored look. Gained a few pounds? Let the tailor let out the pants and jacket to fit with ease and not so tight that you are uncomfortable. You will look and feel better.
4. Pocket Square
Gents, when wearing a suit, try putting a pocket square in your breast pocket. You will be surprised at how many of the ladies love that look, even if they don’t tell you…they really do. It’s the cherry on the sundae. You can even coordinate the pocket square with your tie…(tie is optional). In lieu of a tie, a pocket square will need to give the look of sartorial perfection.
Keep your shirt and suit basic and clean with two simple tones. You can add some contrasting color through your tie or square. If you are wearing a grey suit, try adding a solid red color tie. It will pop. Also try wearing a yellow, blue (or if you are really daring), a wild print tie. If the suit color is conservative, mix it up with a wild print tie for that special outing.
Freshly polished low cut loafers can provide a touch of class, while showing some sock. If you feel a bit more daring, you can combine a wilder looking sock that can often be a conversation, ice-breaker, when sitting at a gathering with friends. A cool, fun, off-the-wall pair of socks can certainly add some flavor to your look.
Coordinate the color of the shoe with the suit, sports jacket or pant. If you are wearing a brown tone suit, pull out the brown tone shoes. Wearing a black or grey suit, reach for the black shoes.
7. Cuff Links & Tie Bar
Cuff links, you say! If you can still find shirts today that have holes for cuff links, it is such an expression of distinction to see a gent wearing cuff links. It’s a fashion statement for sure. A tie bar is still a very stylish compliment to your wardrobe and if worn, and should be placed halfway up your tie.
Use these 7 small steps to keep your look distinguished and at its best, regardless to what, where and who you are meeting. Looking your best and presenting your dapper side is as important as a firm handshake or the proper social etiquette.
