The mobile application marketplace can be a confusing cacophony of seemingly identical apps all vying for your eyes and money. It can be hard to know which are the best and, more importantly, which are worth the investment. Messaging apps are possibly the biggest culprits of this. After all, sending a message with your phone seems straightforward enough, right? Well, not exactly.
The first thing you should ask yourself when choosing a messaging app is: why do I need this? Are you trying to save money on your texting plan? Great! Most of these apps will make use of Wi-Fi and send only when connected so you won’t send one and use up your expensive data plan. The other question is: are my friends using one in particular? The unfortunate side of free enterprise is that each app is a walled garden and you can usually only communicate with other users of the application. Below are four popular options that combined have millions of users worldwide.
1. WhatsApp – This is the app that has it all. You can send messages, photos, videos and voice messages on Wi-Fi or over your provider’s cellular network. The great part is that you can even make and receive voice calls using the app! The basic features are free but the full version is only $0.99 per year! Less than a dollar a year for all these features is a great deal no matter how you look at it.
2. Viber – Much like WhatsApp, Viber lets your message and call others in the app. But it adds the option of group messaging and video calls as well. And if you want to call people outside of the app, you can purchase credits as you need them! The basic functions are free to use.
3. Kakoatalk – Messaging, calls, video calls, virtual stickers – this one has a lot going for it. It even offers those voice calls for FREE! There are even built-in games. 150 million worldwide users can’t be wrong. The only downside is the ads. They aren’t intrusive but they are there.
4. WeChat – One word sets this one apart from all the others: FREE. No ads, no hidden fees – nothing but you and your friends. Video, text, voice and stickers – WeChat is one of the most popular apps in the Google and Apple app stores for a great reason!
Using these mobile apps can connect you with old friend and even help you make a few new ones. And they can save you money, too! Do you love one that we didn’t have on our list? Let us know in the comment section below!
